TWB's Starter Stitch Society - Intermediate Knitting Class (Socks)
Learn to knit socks with us at The Woolly Bulldog!
In this class students will learn how to knit DK Standard Socks (Cuff Down Construction)
This class takes place in person at The Woolly Bulldog, located at
#4 - 9110 Glover Road in Fort Langley, BC
This class is split into two 2 hr long sessions on:
Tuesday, June 16, 2026 and June 30, 2026
between 6:30pm-8:30pm.
***Please read through the following completely before signing up.***
Prerequisites:
Students in this class must be intermediate knitters who are comfortable following basic patterns, casting on in their preferred method and knitting in the round. Experience with slipping stitches, decreases (SSK, k2tog, p2tog), and magic loop is beneficial but not necessary. As this is a two-session course that focuses on learning specific sock skills, students must come to their first class prepared with the cuff and leg of ONE sock already knit to their desired length.
In their first class, students will learn how to knit a heel flap, turn their heel and create a gusset upon the sock leg they have already knit. The second class will teach students how to shape their sock toe with decreases and graft with kitchener stitch. They will leave with knowledge for how to weave in ends and block their socks at home.
Class Materials (not included):
Please purchase the following materials and bring them with you to class. All materials can be purchased at TWB. Registrants will receive a student discount of 15% to be used for class supplies.
- 1 copy of the following pattern: DK Standard Socks (Cuff Down Construction) by Carlie Perrins of Northwoods Knit Co
(Note: Carlie offers a free pattern code to new subscribers of her email newsletter! You can sign up for it here) -
Required Needles: 1 pair of 3.25 mm (US size 3) circular needles in either 80cm (32”) or 100cm (40") length for magic loop
Optional Needles: 1 pair of 3.25 mm (US size 3) small circular needles in 23cm (9") length to knit the cuff, leg and foot of the sock, as per your knitting preferences. These are not mandatory; some knitters prefer to make socks on small circular needles, then transfer onto larger circular needles for magic loop only when needed.
- DK yarn of choice or fingering weight yarn held double (see Purchasing Yarn section below for suggestions)
- A tapestry needle for weaving in finished ends, fabric measuring tape, stitch markers and optional but encouraged sock blockers for finishing.
Purchasing the Pattern:
Patterns are the instructions which guide you through your project. They take time, effort, and skill to create. To ensure the pattern creator receives fair compensation for their work, each knitter should purchase their own pattern for individual use rather than purchasing the pattern with the intent to share with others.
The pattern can be purchased on Ravelry at DK Standard Socks (Cuff Down Construction by Carlie Perrins) (a free Ravelry account must be made prior to purchasing - we can also help you purchase this pattern via Ravelry in-store)
- (Note: Carlie offers a free pattern code to new subscribers of her email newsletter! You can sign up for it here)
Purchasing Yarn:
The DK Standard Socks are knit with either one strand of DK weight yarn or with two strands of fingering weight yarn held together. We strongly recommend choosing a sock appropriate yarn (ie. with nylon content, often in 80/20 or 85/15 wool/nylon ratio)
Students may choose to use one single colour for their entire project or may wish to use multiple colours for stripes or a contrasting cuff, heel and toe. The pattern includes instruction for all options.
Purchasing Needles:
Knitting needles come in different lengths (measured in both centimeters and inches) and thicknesses (measured in millimeters and US numerically). Needles can also be flat, circular, or double-pointed. They can be purchased at TWB.
The DK Standard Socks are made with 3.25 mm (US size 3) circular needles of either 80cm (32") or 100 cm (40") length, using the magic loop method. Students may choose to use 3.25 mm (US size 3) 9" circulars to knit the sock cuff, leg and foot if this suits their preferences.
IMPORTANT: Starting Your Sock
As this is a special skills class which focuses on how to knit sock heels/gussets and toes, students MUST come to their first class with the cuff and leg for ONE sock already knit to their desired length. Here are some helpful resources:
